Medical treatment based on the characteristics of an individual’s genome (genomic medicine) is gradually becoming a reality. We have been performing comprehensive analyses of individual genomic differences to search for genomic polymorphisms and mutations that are related to the onset of various multifactorial diseases (complex diseases), monogenic diseases, and the effects and side-effects of drugs. Based on the results of these analyses, it is becoming possible to select therapeutic drugs/treatments to suit the individual and estimate an individual’s genetic risk for diseases. We are also participating in activities to build and maintain a public database so that the results of this genomic medical research can be applied as widely as possible. Our research activities will make a significant contribution to the development of genomic medicine.
